Sunday in New York City

Last night we went to a reading of “Paper Son” by Christine Toy, put on by the Diversecity Theater Co. at the Garrett Room in New York City. On the way there we got caught in a heavy rainstorm and by the time we got there we were drenched. My 15 year old daughter wasn’t sure if she would even like the reading, but she loved it! We thought it was going to be a serious drama but it turned out to be pretty funny. The story was about Tommy Lee, a Chinese- born U.S. army soldier, who must reconcile his American identity with his family’s illegal immigrant journey. The actors: Jason Tam, Pearl Sun, Eric Bondoc and  Susie Misner were believable in their roles and their energy was contagious.  It’s always amazing to me that when the writing is good, you don’t need sets, costumes, special effects or even a stage. Christine Toy is a very talented writer.
